Turkmenistan has been elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the period 2026-2028 years. This decision was announced at the recently held 75th plenary meeting of the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly. As it is known, the Economic and Social Council is one of the main organs of the United Nations, which is responsible for coordinating the work of 15 specialized agencies, 9 structural commissions and 5 regional commissions of the organization, working on economic and social issues. The Council consists of 54 countries, elected every two years from among the 193 States of the United Nations. Each year, 18 countries are elected from regional groups to replace the countries whose terms of office expire. Turkmenistan was accepted as a member of this prestigious organization in 2013-2015 years at first time, and then again in 2019-2021 years it was accepted as a member of this prestigious body, which plays a central role in the UN system in promoting the economic, social and environmental aspects of sustainable development
